When one thinks of ‘Crossroads’, one would imagine a landlocked locale. But in this portmanteau feature, eight Pacific women across seven islands are linked by their relationships with water, the literal translation of the word ‘Vai’. Vai is also the name of a woman whose life is mapped out by nine female directors – from a playful child to a wise great-grandmother. The eight shorts are filmed in poetic long takes along islands such as Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, highlighting pivotal moments experienced by the titular character, who has to decide between championing her culture and ambitions or succumb to the pull of modernisation. A profound meditation on time, connection and ancestry, this project is a testament to the experiences of indigenous South Pacific women.

This screening is supported by the New Zealand High Commission in Singapore.
