The Creatures (1966)

Singapore Premiere | Sun 27 Oct, 4.00pm | Oldham Theatre

Dir. Agnés Varda | France | Drama/Sci-Fi | 92 mins | DCP | French with English subtitles | PG

When Edgar Piccoli, a sci-fi novelist, moves into a new town with his mute wife, strange occurrences are abound: the town’s residents begin to act terribly towards one another, wrecking relationships within minutes. Edgar’s investigation into these occurrences reveals how horrifyingly easy it is to manipulate human bonds and encounters. A genre-defying and mind-bending film, The Creatures blurs the lines between reality and fiction, and brings a meta-fictive quality to its storytelling. It may be one of Agnés Varda’s lesser-known efforts, but her use of colour in a primarily black-and-white picture and innovative book-within-a-film technique makes it one of the unsung works of the French New Wave.

This screening is supported by the Embassy of France in Singapore.
