Night on Earth (1991)

One night in five cities, five different taxi drivers pick up passengers that would transpire into varying dramatic encounters. True to Jim Jarmusch’s style, these characters engage in conversations fraught with social conflict, exacerbated by the unhelpful one-directional seating in the taxi. Yet as both driver and passenger depart from this shared moment each with life-changing lessons, the brevity of taxi rides is perhaps not as inconsequential as it often seems. Set against the lighthearted mood and playful narrative of the film, Night on Earth carefully treads the underlying tensions between conflicting personalities, occupations, races, and faiths forced to coexist momentarily. The result is an exhilarating, yet unforgettable collection of five vignettes shot across two continents.
