For Sama (2019)

Opening Film – Singapore Premiere | Thu 24 Oct, 8.00pm & Sun 27 Oct, 1.30pm | Oldham Theatre

Dir. Waad Al-Kateab & Edward Watts | Syria | Documentary | 95 mins | DCP | Arabic with English subtitles | NC16 (Some Mature Content)

This shatteringly powerful first documentary feature by co-directors Waad Al-Kateab and Edward Watts provides a rare female insider look into Assad’s inhumane regime in Aleppo, Syria many years back. Armed with a camcorder and tireless optimism, Al-Kateab records down her personal journey of falling in love, marriage and childbirth amidst the violent authoritarian clampdown. “The film is the only weapon I have to fight against the regime,” she says. The result is an emotionally intense video diary that not only exposes the horrors of living under constant shelling, but also celebrates love, humanity, and the bravery of a woman and her baby desiring for normalcy in a time of extreme socio-political unrest.
