Dir. Krzysztof Kieślowski | 1979 | Poland | Comedy-Drama | 117 mins | DCP | Polish with English subtitles | NC16 (Scenes of Intimacy)

Filip Mosz is a modest factory worker who lives a contented life in Poland. Mosz has everything he ever wanted – a caring wife, a new-born daughter, and a roof over their heads. This all changes when Mosz buys his first camera in hopes of capturing his daughter’s childhood memories. As the only employee who owns a camera, Mosz’s supervisors ask him to film the company’s jubilee celebration. What starts as a simple project sparks a newfound passion in filmmaking. The film follows Mosz’s growing obsession with cinema as he struggles between his increasingly strained relationship with his family and the need to create something bigger than himself.

Filmed in the 1970s when Poland was under Communist rule, Camera Buff explores the struggles of a filmmaker whose artistic expression is inhibited by a culture of censorship. In the pursuit of presenting an unabridged reality, the filmmaker’s ethic is questioned as he discovers the power of film to create and destroy. Regarded as one of Poland’s most acclaimed filmmakers, director Krzysztof Kieślowski reveals his early experiences as a documentary filmmaker – an occupation which is not only rife with personal fulfilment and sacrifices, but bears the responsibility of revealing the truth of society as one sees it.
