After Life (1998)

Sat 26 Oct, 1.30pm | Oldham Theatre

Dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda | Japan | Drama | 118 mins | DCP | Japanese with English subtitles | PG

What if when you pass on, you are asked to decide on a happy memory to take with you to the afterlife? That is the intriguing premise from this early, defining work of master filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose effort here signalled a keener interest in exploring the intersection between film and memory at life’s ultimate checkpoint: death. Shot in a faux-documentary style punctuated by moments of lyrical beauty, After Life asks of us to reflect on our existence and relationships with our loved ones, and in the process, it reveals so much and with such subtlety about what it means to let go.

The In-Betweens, a dialogue about life and death, will be held before the screening of After Life.
